Warmest congratulations to Mr. Akila Indika Herath on receiving the vice chancellor’s awards for the most outstanding Student Inventor/Innovator at the 18th vice chancellor’s awards ceremony 2022 – University of Ruhuna.

Mr. Akila Indika Herath, is a recently (last year) passed out graduate of Agricultural Resource Management and Technology. Though he had chosen the Department of Agricultural Engineering for his major at final year, he was closely working with the engineering department team lead by Prof. PLAG Alwis since from the beginning of his undergraduate career.    

Akila, first invented his multipurpose foldable mammoty under the supervision of the Agricultural Engineering Department for which he received a gold medal in 2019 in the Southern Province Invention and Innovation Competition.

His second invention, hand-held pneumatic paddy seeder also received a gold medal in the same competition. Both inventions had been nominated for the International Inventions Exhibition & Competition “Sahasak Nimawum 2019” which was organized by the Sri Lankan Inventors Commission’s. There he won a gold medal for his multipurpose mammoty and a silver medal for paddy seeder there. Next year, in 2020 he received another silver medal for his third invention for pneumatic sprouted seed establisher at the Sahasak Nimawum exhibition and competition.

There are several other inventions such as the budding puncher, the leap preventing fish transfer net and many more to come. Southern Provincial Industrial Development Authority has offed him an honorary award for his contributions to these inventions in 2019.
